By default, BitLocker uses the algorithm configured on the drive to encrypt the drive. The encryption algorithm used by hardware-based encryption is set when the drive is partitioned. Note: The “Choose drive encryption method and cipher strength” policy setting does not apply to hardware-based encryption. If you do not configure this policy setting, BitLocker will use software-based encryption irrespective of hardware-based encryption avaiilability If you disable this policy setting, BitLocker cannot use hardware-based encryption with operating system drives and BitLocker software-based encryption will be used by default when the drive is encrypted. If you enable this policy setting, you can specify additional options that control whether BitLocker software-based encryption is used instead of hardware-based encryption on computers that do not support hardware-based encryption and whether you want to restrict the encryption algorithms and cipher suites used with hardware-based encryption. Using hardware-based encryption can improve performance of drive operations that involve frequent reading or writing of data to the drive. This policy setting allows you to manage BitLocker’s use of hardware-based encryption on fixed data drives and specify which encryption algorithms it can use with hardware-based encryption. Turning Bitlocker ON, despite a functional TPM, proceeded to software encrypt, completely ignoring the prepared TPM. I vaguely remember a problem a few years ago with encrypting Samsung SSDs using hardware Bitlocker encryption, but did not expect or read about any issue with the M.2 form factor drives. And the "device meets the requirements for standard hardware security." Security Processor Details show that TPM attestation and storage are ready.

Prior to TPM initialization, the noted pre-existing drivers usb2ser.sys, ssdudfu.sys, VIA_USB_ETS.sys, mbtusbser.sys, and wdsam64_prewin8.sys are now listed as Core Isolation- incompatible drivers when they never were before the TPM was cleared and initialized. All of the drivers mentioned were in their latest iterations.

The "Prepare the TPM" link is dimmed out (maybe because it's already prepared?) and the act of initializing the TPM caused Core Isolation to turn off, revealing driver incompatibilities that never existed before. But when using Bitlocker to institute HARDWARE ENCRYPTION (tpm.msc), you hit a brick wall. Using administrative Powershell however, all of the requisite (CL) commands needed to prepare/initialize the TPM as per the TPM technology overview in the MS website here were performed and were validated. After accessing the UEFI BIOS and upgrading the TPM to the latest Infineon driver using ASUS' instructions, Bitlocker will not indicate proper preparation of the TPM after the credentials are cleared.

It has been a protean and seemingly fruitless effort to encrypt my Samsung NVMe 860 Pro boot drive in Windows 10 Pro using the Bit locker feature.
